Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way the body uses blood sugar. The most common forms of diabetes are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Patients who are pregnant may also develop gestational diabetes, which usually resolves on its own after delivery of the baby.

What causes diabetes?

In a healthy person, the pancreas produces a substance known as “insulin” in response to the presence of sugar in the blood. This substance is responsible for keeping blood sugar at a healthy level.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the body to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Without insulin, blood sugar levels become dangerously high.

In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas continues to produce insulin, but the body becomes resistant to its effects. As with type 1 diabetes, blood sugar rises to an unsafe level unless the patient receives treatment.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Both types of diabetes cause similar symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme thirst
  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent infections
  • Slow healing of sores
  • Ketones in the urine

If you have any of these symptoms, come in to Urologic Surgeons of Arizona for consultation.

Why is treatment important?

If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications, such as nerve damage and heart disease. Also, blood sugar levels that are too low or too high pose an immediate danger to the patient and may even be fatal.

How is diabetes diagnosed?

The providers at Urologic Surgeons of Arizona may suspect diabetes based on the patient’s symptoms. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor begins by ordering a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test. This test measures the patient’s average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.

Other tests used to diagnose diabetes include:

  • Random blood sugar tests
  • Fasting blood sugar tests
  • Glucose tolerance tests.

If you think you may have diabetes, visit Urologic Surgeons of Arizona for a diagnosis.

What treatments are available?

Patients with diabetes may need insulin therapy and oral medications to control blood sugar levels. Patients with this condition also need to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, eat a healthy diet, and maintain a healthy weight.
