Wellness Exams Q & A

What is a wellness exam?

A wellness exam is a thorough health check that typically takes place once a year. It’s also called an annual physical.

Your wellness exam is a process that evaluates your general well-being and health. Dr. Ahmad also looks for the early signs of chronic health problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Several conditions don’t cause symptoms, at least in their earlier stages. By the time you’re aware of the fact, there’s something wrong, and it’s unlikely that your prognosis will be as good as if you’d had treatment following an early screening test.

What happens during a wellness exam?

When you attend your wellness exam at Urologic Surgeons of Arizona, Dr. Ahmad starts by reviewing your medical history. She talks to you about your current health and asks about any health problems you have and how you’re managing them.

Next, Dr. Ahmad does a physical examination. She listens to your heart and lungs. She records your:

  • Heart rate
  • Breathing rate
  • Temperature
  • Blood pressure
  • Weight

Dr. Ahmad looks at your hair, nails, teeth, and skin for signs of medical problems. She also tests your reflexes, assesses how freely you move and your balance, and sees how well you react both physically and mentally.

Men and women have almost the same wellness exam apart from the assessment of their reproductive systems. Men should have their genitals examined and a prostate check. Women should have an internal pelvic exam.

If you’re a woman and due for one, this is an excellent opportunity to have your Pap smear done. A Pap smear looks for signs of cervical cancer and is vital in preventing this common form of cancer from developing.

What tests might I need during a wellness exam?

Dr. Ahmad usually orders a blood workup to check for problems like:

  • Infections
  • Deficiencies
  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol

You might need to have an EKG (electrocardiogram) to record your heart function. An AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm) screening can check how healthy your heart is. An ABI (ankle-brachial index) shows how good your blood flow is around your body.

Your wellness exam can also include pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to assess the health of your lungs. You might have sight and hearing tests.

Body composition analysis is another increasingly standard test that measures the ratio of fat to lean tissue in your body. Dr. Ahmad also helps you with your wellness plan, which is designed to keep you in good health.

If you haven’t had a thorough checkup recently, you should arrange a wellness exam with Dr. Ahmad. Call Urologic Surgeons of Arizona today to schedule your wellness exam or book an appointment online.
