Vasectomy Q & A

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe, effective way of permanently preventing pregnancy. If you decide you don’t want to be a father again — or at all — vasectomy is the best way to avoid parenthood in the future.

Male vasectomy is a far more straightforward procedure than female sterilization, which involves invasive surgery. Vasectomy is the most popular choice of permanent birth control in the United States.

What happens during a vasectomy?

Your vasectomy is done under a local anesthetic. Our providers first need to find the vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm up from your testicles. He can feel the vas deferens under the skin on your scrotum.

When he finds it, our providers use special surgical instruments to make a small hole in your skin. He stretches the skin just enough so he can get to the vas deferens. He then cuts the tube and ties off the two ends.

Apart from possibly feeling a slight tug during the procedure, your vasectomy shouldn’t be painful.

Our providers are the first surgeons to perform a no-scalpel vasectomy. This minimally invasive in-office procedure takes about 30 minutes.

What happens after a vasectomy?

You might develop some bruising and swelling in your groin after your vasectomy. You can use over-the-counter pain medication if necessary. You can also apply cold compresses to your scrotum to reduce swelling.

The area should be back to normal in about three days.

Cutting and tying the vas deferens prevents your sperm from mixing with your semen when you ejaculate. Your semen won’t look any different, but it won’t contain sperm. However, keep in mind that you won’t be sterile right away.

Any sperm that were already in your system need to clear out, so use other forms of birth control for a while. You need to see our providers for sperm counts at follow-up appointments. He can give you the all-clear when there’s no sperm in your ejaculate.

If you change your mind about your vasectomy in the future, it’s possible to reverse it. Reversal is a more complex procedure than doing the vasectomy, so the outcome can’t be guaranteed.

How reliable is a vasectomy?

While the only sure way to prevent pregnancy is not to have sex at all, vasectomy is one of the most dependable methods of birth control. The failure rate for vasectomies is very low, but in a few rare cases, sperm goes cross the gap between the tied-off ends of the vas deferens.

You need to see our providers at intervals to give a sperm sample. He tests it to check that no sperm are getting through. If they are, our providers can repeat your vasectomy, but this is very rarely necessary.
